Landscape photography in arid desert areas of the southwest United States includes colorful canyons and other rock formations unlike anywhere else. Its one of our favorite spots for hiking and exploring. Click images for more.

Horizontal Images
The sky points a way out of this slot canyon. Antelope Canyon was formed by the erosion of Navajo Sandstone due to flash flooding and other processes to form characteristic "flowing" shapes.

A Way Out

Zabriskie Point is a part of the Amargosa Range located east of Death Valley noted for its erosional landscape. It is composed of sediments from Furnace Creek Lake, which dried up 5 million years ago — long before Death Valley came into existence.

Brainy

Red sandstone in Valley of Fire State Park has been shaped by nature to resemble driftwood. Known as Aztec Sandstone, the rock formed from shifting sand dunes about 150 million years ago.

The Eye of the Eagle formation in Lower Antelope Canyon shines from lighting from behind.

Eagle Eye

This stone swath in Bryce Canyon positively lit up like burning coals on a fire as the early morning sun came over the canyon walls.

Embers of Daybreak

Layered rock of Grand Cayon reveal millions of years of geologic history. The canyon is some 277 miles long, up to 18 miles wide, and attains a depth of over a mile.

Grandview

Our guide called this area in White Pocket "The Oyster". What a meal - the multi-colored rock swirl was about twelve feet tall.

Antelope Canyon descends about fifty feet beneath the desert surface. This shot is directly below a formation known as the Eagle Head. This version is in landscape orientation.

Petroblaze II

The word "hoodoo" means to bewitch, which is what Bryce Canyon's rock formations surely do. The main natural forces of weathering and erosion that create the Hoodoos are ice and rain.

White Pocket is simply out of this world with a natural beauty like no other. It is best to visit after a rainfall so your vehicle does not get stuck in the sand along the way in and out.

Globular dunestone in White Pocket within the Vermillion Cliffs National Monument have characteristic polygonal cracks. A lonely pine tree is one of the only signs of life in the entire area.
